Bush and the "Blame Game"
September 10, 2005 - In response to the
public outrage over the mishandling of the Katrina disaster,
the Bush spin machine kicked into high gear this week. In
lock-step together like so many brown shirts, Republicans
from the President on down took to the airwaves stating
that they didn't want to engage in a "blame-game"
(a phrase with a distincly Karl Rove flavor.) But in the
same breath they did just that, pointing fingers at state
and local officials.
But while blaming others for their own faults may have worked
when the action was far away in Iraq and had little effect
on the daily lives of Americans, Katrina and its aftermath
has hit close to home. With many saying "this could
have been me," the Bush administration may finally
be held accountable.
Crying "Politics" is Crying
Wolf
September 9, 2005 - As they have done
when ever questions have arisen over their policies, the
Republicans are once again crying foul in the wake of pointed
critism of their actions or inaction during the Katrina
disaster. Screaming "politics" as the reason for
questions from the other side of the aisle, Republicans
are once more trying to paint anyone who questions their
motives as un-American. But isn't voicing dissent one of
our fundamental rights as citizens? Further, isn't opening
debate the role of the opposition party in our system of
checks and balances? This most political of administrations
is once again crying wolf when it is they who are actually
politicizing a crisis.
No-Bid Relief Coming to a Disaster Near
You?
September 9, 2005 - In the immediate wake
(relatively speaking as "immediate in the Bush lexicon
can mean anything from six minutes to three days) of the
Katrina disaster, President Bush stated that rather than
involve the government directly, he intended to leave the
rebuilding of New Orleans and the gulf coast to "the
experts." With the subsequent dispatch of Vice President
Dick Cheney to the area to survey the situation, one can
only surmise that it is just a matter of time before Halliburton
begins getting no-bid contracts again.
